illustration day mates! nice view from up there.

for those wondering, this particular dinosaur is a ‘giraffatitan’, a tall sauropod from the jurassic. you’ve probably seen before but falsely labelled as ‘brachiosaurus’, which is a similar but less giraffe-like sauropod that lived in north america, while giraffatitan lived in africa. early paleontologists thought they were the same species, and giraffatitan had a much more complete specimen, which is why a lot of brachiosaurus illustrations looked like this.

i tried to be anatomically accurate with these guys for once, and it’s surprising once you realise just how small their heads are compared to their massive necks. it makes sense though. sauropods don’t do a lot of thinking or chewing, they’re basically giant tree vaccuum cleaners, and the head is pretty much just a feeding hole.

also yes, this does mean the next batch of comics are going to be dinosaur-related. i haven’t been super happy with my earlier dinosaur comics so this time around i’ve tried to improve the art and make the jokes a little funnier. hope you guys like them.

another day, another illustration i probably should’ve planned ahead better instead of winging it and hoping i’d figure it all out along the way. i think it came out a bit too blue and visually noisy (but hey, it’s not the worst thing i’ve ever drawn).

as some of you may know, this is actually based on a real window on the international space station in the “cupola” module, which has by far the greatest view of any window on earth (or off earth, in this case). the actual window is a tiny bit little smaller than this one though, and probably doesn’t have as much random garbage floating around most of the time.

finally another slice of life illustration! these are way easier than drawing dinosaurs or spaceships.

this one probably doesn’t have as nice colours or composition as some of my other illustrations, but i sure had a blast adding all the little easter eggs around sedna’s room (i wonder if any rocket nerds will notice anything… familiar about some of sedna’s rocket designs). :P

new illustration mates! this one’s totally not autobiographical mum, i swear.

i like to try and use a different colour palette for each illustration and so i originally drew this in mostly cool blue colours, but it wasn’t really working so i eventually gave up and defaulted back to purple and pink again. i might put the original on patreon if anyone’s interested.

i thought it would be fun to do a series of drawings depicting what a future where humanity has colonised the solar system might look like, so for today’s illustration i started with the planet mercury.

here you can see an armada of spaceships approaching a city hidden inside the craters on the north pole where the sun never reaches and even water ice can be found. of course, mercury isn’t exactly the most hospitable of places in the universe even with a permanent shelter from the sun, so it would probably be more useful as a scientific outpost rather than an actual colony (like antarctica), but given all the volatile materials blasted onto the mercurian surface by the sun i suspect geologists would have plenty of science to do.

doing wildly different styles and subject matters for each illustration has really impressed upon me why so many popular online creators have found one thing that they can absolutely nail and do it over and over again. trying new things is hard. especially when you have no idea how you’re going to get to the finish line. i just hope it pays off and i actually get better at illustration cuz i’m way too lazy to keep challenging myself like this forever.

hurray! a considerably less ridiculously time-consuming illustration than the last one. i bet people will like it more than that one anyway because clouds are pretty and life is unfair. :(

apparently i have a thing for painstakingly drawing all the stars 100% accurately and then covering half of them with clouds anyway. but it’s the thought that counts, right guys?

illustration day mates. this one’s inspired by the book ‘the time machine’ written in 1895 by h. g. wells. of course, in the book the time traveller goes 800,000 years into the future, not 66 million years into the past, but in this version dini is the time traveller so what else would you expect?

i hate this illustration. it’s so complicated i procrastinated on it for months because i wasn’t confident i could do it. then when the deadline was getting close i spent day after day drawing, redrawing, tweaking, and redrawing again, trying to get it to work. i’m still not 100% happy with it but i’m gonna stop here so i can have my life back.

illustration day boys! and this is an extra special one! 10.5 hours from this post, at around 8:30pm utc (12:30pm pst, 3:30pm est, 7:30am aest), the rover “perseverance” will attempt to soft land on the surface of the planet mars. if it succeeds, this illustration will be a celebration for percy and nasa’s amazing accomplishment. if it fails, this will be more of a sad farewell. either way, i definitely need to come back and edit this description based on the outcome.

this is possibly the most i’ve ever procrastinated on an illustration. drawing complex messes of machinery is so hard and confusing, i just kept putting it off. pretty happy with the outcome though.

UPDATE: PERCY MADE IT! EVERYTHING IS OKAY IN THE WORLD!!!

another day, another illustration that took me way longer than it should have because i have no idea what i’m doing. this time starring my tribute to the primary antagonist and undisputed best character of the peanuts universe, the kite-eating tree.

and good grief! is that yuri? classic sedna readers rejoice, the bun is back! and with a slight redesign (because let’s be honest, she looked pretty terrible in classic sedna). expect to see more yuri in the next few comics.

happy 2021 mates! kicking off the year with a cute illustration which some might call a ripoff of ‘the martian’, but i prefer to think of it as a tribute. if anyone recognizes this, yes it’s the one i submitted to the clip studio illustration competition months ago (i have a large buffer).

lots of spacey stuff to be excited about this year. there’s a lunar eclipse in may, spacex starship and boeing starliner will have their first orbital flights (hopefully), and the james webb telescope (the successor to hubble) will finally launch in october (maybe), and boy are my buttcheeks gonna be clenched when that happens.
